MAXONS Goes Above & Beyond for the Kids of St. Spyridon
EVENTS
Angeliki Vafiadis, Sr. Project Management Administrator
St. Spyridon Church in Washington Heights was established in the 1930’s. St. Spyridon developed a school whose mission is "To provide a well-rounded education, which promotes spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical development". Unfortunately, as the neighborhood changed over the years attendance at the church and enrollment at the school dropped along with their revenues. As often happens, difficult budget decisions were made and important maintenance projects could not be continued which caused parts of the church’s interior to deteriorate over time.
In 2006, a priest by the name of Father George was sent to St. Spyridon with the goal of saving the school for underprivileged kids in the community. Father George identified emergency repairs that were essential for the school to operate with very limited funds. One of the major issues to be addressed was eleven windows of various sizes that had been broken over some time. With this being such a bitter winter the classrooms were often freezing, making it a nearly impossible environment for any child to learn.
When I approached the company’s leadership about possibly of making a donation to the school, I explained the situation and, rather than just donate funds, they made the decision to not only pay the entire cost of replacing the windows but also offered to oversee the project to ensure the work was done quickly and properly!
After the windows were replaced, Father George informed me that the children, many from underprivileged backgrounds, were stating how much warmer they were, how they no longer had to wear their coats in class or in the cafeteria. It is very touching to hear children be so appreciative.
MAXONS went "Above & Beyond" for me and everyone at St. Spyridon Church by having compassion and helping them to show that people do care and want to help! Father George, the children of St. Spyridon and I am most grateful for what MAXONS contributed, most especially during this difficult economy. Read some of the letters from the children.
